The Faculty of Education within the University of Malta is continuing the series of webinars
and seminars for educators (including teachers, LSEs, support services staff and educational leaders) which started in May 2020 and proved to be so popular during the first series. Series 2 has weekly webinars and seminars which focus on topics that educators face in their day-today realities of schools, and particularly during this time. Digital Literacy Support Staff in Middle and Secondary Schools

The Directorate for Digital Literacy and Transversal Skills is committed to continue to support educators in using technologies and enable them to address the challenges they may face. Many educators are seeking supports about the use of Microsoft Teams, including how to create standard and private channels, how to assign homework and how to use the class notebook. Kindly note that we are providing remote support through our Support Teachers, and educators are highly encouraged to contact us for any queries related digital teaching and learning.

Malta Book Festival 2020 – Virtual Edition

The 2020 Malta Book Festival – virtual edition is being organised by the National Book Council and will take place online between 11-15 November. The Malta Book Festival is an opportunity to develop the basic skills related to the appreciation of books and reading, the capacity to choose books of one’s liking, and familiarise oneself with the offer from local publishers.

Students who register for the online book festival will this year receive a 5 Euro voucher to spend, instead of the usual 3 Euro.

Minister for Education Visits Rabat Primary School

The Minister for Education, Dr. Owen Bonnici, and the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Francis Fabri, visited Rabat Primary School to view how the school and staff have been implementing over 50 security measures aimed at limiting the spread of Covid-19 amongst students and staff. The Head of School, Ms. Antonella Ferrante provided a short tour of the school and the measures being undertaken, such as the need for all staff and visitors to sign in upon entering the premises, posters on the noticeboards to remind students and staff to maintain proper hand hygiene, stickers on the floors to help maintain social distance, and the availability of santizing wipes and gel in every classroom. Ms. Josephine Mifsud, Head of College Network, was also present for the visit.

Both the Minister for Education and the Permanent Secretary praised the school’s efforts in striving to adhere to all safety measures, finding everything according to the published guidelines.

Recommendations for the Well-Being of Students during the Covid-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on educators and students alike. Clearly, it has impacted their psycho-social and emotional wellbeing, as well as their teaching and learning. This could have also contributed to gaps and/or losses in children’s knowledge and understanding, the impact of the loss of socialisation, friendships and self-esteem all of which are considered “essential for good mental well-being” (World Health Organisation [WHO], 2020, p.1).

The Ministry for Education and Employment, in collaboration with the Faculty of Education at the University of Malta, has prepared a document with recommendations for the well-being of students. Please click on the link below to access the full document in PDF:

Refresher Session on MS Teams for Middle and Secondary School Educators
