Book Week Activities at Mtarfa Primary School

On the30th of April, the students and educators at Mtarfa Primary School, dropped their usual activities and engaged in run reading sessions and activities together. These included:

  1. A Special Assembly on the importance of readying
  2. Students meeting with Book Authors
  3. A book scavenger hung
  4. A book tasting activity
  5. Virtual Conference with eTwinning Partners about the project, ‘Read, Share and Enjoy’
  6. Various book character dress-up and show and tell activities

Well done to all the students who participated eagerly in the activities prepared by their dedicated educators!

Malta School of Music publishes Prospectus for 2022-2023

The Malta School of Music has just published its Prospectus for the 2022-2023 scholastic year, and announced that applications for new students will be open between the 18th and 31st of May.

The School of Music currently caters for 800 students ranging from beginners to higher diploma level. With a strong team of 80 specialized music teachers, the school offers an unrivalled opportunity for any student at any level who would like to delve into the world of music. The school offers accredited courses from MQF Level 1 to MQF Level 5, as well as an opportunity to join the school in a more leisurely manner for those who wish to focus on the enjoyment that music gives.

Educational Euroscience Webinars for Educators

The Faculty of Education (UM) is working in collaboration with the Centre for Educational
Neuroscience at University College London/Birbeck and the Educational Neuroscience Hub Europe (Malta) to promote and disseminate ways in which educational neuroscience can inform classroom instruction amongst the local educators and schools. Our first initiative consists of two webinars aimed towards an understanding of educational neuroscience and its potential application to understand and improve student learning.

Reading for Pleasure: Online Reading Sessions

The National Literacy Agency has compiled a series of video clips showing reading for pleasure sessions for early years and primary school children. These videoclips introduce books in a fun way to promote a love of reading. These sessions were prepared by The National Literacy Agency’s reading animators. Books are animated in a way which stimulates children’s imagination. Each book is enhanced with activities and exercises related to the story. Malta AgriFair – Invitation for Middle and Secondary Schools Students

The Malta AgriFair2022 is a national event organised by the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights (MAFA) for the first time ever. The main aim of the AgriFair is to promote local produce, machinery, systems, and technological developments in the agricultural and fisheries sectors, by bringing together major stakeholders in the field, from large organisations to small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs). The Fair will provide a platform for both the local farming community, as well as producers, to inform and communicate to the public about the industries’ products and services.

During this Fair one will be able to understand the meaning of Farm to Fork, whereby the food chain system of food production, harvesting, processing, distributing, and consuming is demonstrated in the most visual, innovative, and interactive manner. AgriFair will also have a live animal section where Maltese breeds will be showcased. An area dedicated to agriculture with demo fields which will be showcasing crops, trees and vines. A large honeycomb structure giving an experience related to the Maltese honeybee and many other interesting demonstrations related to the agriculture and fisheries sector. In this regard the MAFA would like to invite groups from middle and secondary schools to visit the Malta AgriFair 2022 on Friday 20thMay between 10:00 and 13:00. Entry is free of charge. Schools which are interested in visiting the AgriFair are to contact the Events and Promotion Unit on agrifair.mafa@gov.mt. Groups will be admitted at a first come first served basis.

Scientix Seminar for Mathematics Teachers

The science centre in Pembroke recently organised the Scientix Seminar. The seminar engaged Mathematics teachers to explore the newly designed SEAC Maths Resource packs and share the positive experiences of educators planning mathematic activities within an applied setting. Ms. D. Scicluna Bugeja (Assistant Director – DLAP) welcomed the seminar participants and highlighted the educator’s pivotal role to adapt resources, thus facilitating students learning and achievements.

Ms. Katya Borg and Mr. Martin Galea shared their positive experiences of using the SEAC resource packs in year 9 and year 10 classes.

Mr. Mario Muscat (EO – Integrated Science) delivered a presentation related to the Scientix network and encouraged seminar participants to browse the Scientix portal to discover a range of shared teaching tools and STEM projects.

During the second part of the seminar, the participants engaged in hands-on workshops to discuss and use a range of activities from the resource packs. Educators are encouraged to browse the Scientix website www.scientix.eu or contact the Science Centre for further information related to forthcoming initiatives and seminars. Mathematics teachers that are interested to receive a copy of the SEAC Maths Resource Packs can contact Ms. Miriam Bugeja (EO – Mathematics Sec).

Celebrate National Space Day: Webinar for Yr 9 – Yr 10 students

National Space Day was created to inspire all of us in the pursuit of knowledge and progress. To celebrate this day, Esplora teamed up with GLOBE Malta and the U.S. Embassy to organise a virtual webinar for students focusing on Space Exploration and Earth Observation.

Participating students will have the opportunity to meet with Peter Falcon, and Earth Science Education and Communications Specialist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, as well as Gordon Caruana Dingli, who recently published a book on the Apollo programme and the locals’ response to it. Moreover, educators and students will have an opportunity to meet with Ramona Mercieca to discover how they can become citizen scientists by collecting data for NASA scientists.

Target Audience: Yr 9 – Yr 10 students

Day: 6th May 2022

Maximum number of participants: 3 classes

Session Duration: 1 hour, to be held between 11am and 1pm.

The exact time will be agreed upon with educators upon booking to ensure that a common time slot can be found among all classes involved. The Webinar is free to attend and will be delivered in English.

Soul Speak – Writing, Reading and Reflection

The National Literacy Agency, in collaboration with Spiritual Development in Schools, is organising four sessions of writing, reading and reflection in a new programme entitled ‘Soul Speak’ for primary children from Year 4 till Year 6 (8-10 year olds).

These sessions are an excellent opportunity for children to train in the Writing Process through imaginative and reflective activities which help children to pray in a creative way. Throughout these sessions, the children will be provided with resources in both English and Maltese to help them express themselves in their preferred language. Age-appropriate level in both English and Maltese is expected from applicants.

At the end of the programme, an exhibition of the childrens’ work will be organised and a celebration activity where a certificate is awarded to those who attend and participate in all four sessions.

Applications will be accepted until Friday 29th April 2022. If the activity is oversubscribed, applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis.

Payment should be made by cheque payable to the National Literacy Agency and should be sent together with reference to the applicant’s details as per the application link to The National Literacy Agency, National Curriculum Centre, Joseph Abela Scolaro Street, Ħamrun ĦMR 1304 by the closing date.
