Seven Reading Recovery Teachers Graduate with MA from the University College London

The National Literacy Agency congratulates the seven Reading Recovery teacher leaders Anna Vassallo, Doreen Scerri, Eleanor Vella, Janet Maria Cristina, Roberta Galea, Rosanne Delceppo, and Rosanne Talbot, on their graduation which was organised virtually by UCL (University College London).

Reading Recovery is an evidence-based early intervention for children who are not getting underway with reading and writing after one year in school. Most children catch up to age-expected levels in a short period of time and no longer need extra help. Reading Recovery teacher leaders receive a high level of training (at Masters level) about literacy learning and teaching of young children. Under the aegis of the Agency, they train prospective Reading Recovery teachers.

Educational Sessions and Competition for Middle and Secondary Schools – SEA MARVEL Project

The project SEA MARVEL joins forces between organizations that, in Sicily and Malta, work to reduce knowledge gaps and promote timely, concrete and feasible actions, research and campaigns to aid nature protection for innovative sustainable development. The geographical position of these islands allows for strategic analyses pertinent to the understanding of Mediterranean risks and challenges caused by climatic and environmental changes. SEA MARVEL aims to raise awareness of the pressures facing our marine life and mitigate the effects of plastic pollution, declining populations of marine species, alien species invasion and climate change effects, in order to enhance biodiversity and protection in Natura 2000 sites. Through SEA MARVEL, challenges shall be set-up to stimulate the participation of the future generations and coastal communities towards the development of sustainable management plans, and will address in integrated way problems linked to marine litter, unknown species abundance and biodiversity resilience in the face of increasing marine human activities. SEA MARVEL is therefore supporting Ministries for Education and the Environment, schools in Malta and Gozo and citizens to scale-up their contribution to reduce the loss of biodiversity. Climate Change: New Online Platform for Educators and Students

The Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes and CEER (Centre for Environmental Education Research) would like to draw educators’ attention to a new online platform, namely Our Planet, Our Future. A link to this platform will be available on https://teleskola.mt/initiatives/. Created by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Climate Action, this platform can support students to understand the causes and impacts of climate change while providing solutions towards a climate-friendly society. The information, activities and interactive resources found within this platform can support educators to facilitate dynamic and cross-curricular learning experiences that promote the acquisition of skills and competences including, research, inquiry, collaborative learning and creative problem solving.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges that the world is facing today. Around the world, young people have been raising their voices and taking action to fight climate change. Therefore, it is important to introduce this energy into schools and empower students to act as catalysts for a better future. Further information about this platform can be sought directly through CLIMA-YOUTH-CLIMATEACTION@ec.europa.eu. Schools wishing more information about educator training in Education for Sustainable Development and Global Education can contact Mr Francesco Debono on francesco.debono@ilearn.edu.mt.
