Online Accredited Awards commencing December 2022 – September 2023

The Institute for Education is reminding interested applicants that applications are currently being accepted online for the below Awards commencing between December 2022 and September 2023. Synchronous (live) sessions delivered through the Institute’s portal are held between 15:30-18:15 unless otherwise specified.

Awards are short accredited courses varying from 1 ECTS to 10 ECTS at MQF Levels 5-7. They offer innovative learning experiences and are the perfect opportunity for educators to develop their knowledge and competences in self-sought areas. Each ECTS achieved is worth twenty-five (25) hours of total learning in the Accelerated Progression Scheme. A complete list of awards can be viewed on the IfE Portal. Certificates for awards will be provided digitally through the Blockerts app.

Information sessions for Year 8 on Accounting as an option subject

The Department of Accounting within the Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes is inviting interested schools to participate in an information session about Accounting as an option subject which will be delivered by the Malta Institute of Accountants (MIA).The session, for Year 8 classes, will delve into the importance of financial literacy and will help students make an informed decision about accountancy as a potential career path. Each session will take approximately 45 minutes and is to be held on the school’s premises.

PSCD Meetings for Parents and Caregivers in Primary School

Parents or caregivers have an enormous influence on a child’s healthy development and well-being, particularly during the early stages of a child’s life. It is therefore important that parents are aware of the topics and learning outcomes of PSCD so they can also engage with their children on topics of relevance and importance to the personal and social development of the children. Some of the learning outcomes of PSCD focus on sexual health issues and how to use the internet and social media platforms in a responsible, respectful, and critical way. The involvement of parents not only acknowledges the role of parents or caregivers in their children over all education and well-being but also leads to closer ties between the parents or caregivers, the school and the teacher.

As in previous years the peripatetic PSCD teachers are therefore organising parents’ meetings according to the different years. The schedule of such meetings is to be decided by the peripatetic teachers together with the SLT. This is the suggested schedule is:

My Choice – Sessions for Secondary Students with Aġenzija Żgħażagħ

The PSCD department within the Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes is once again collaborating with Aġenzija Żgħażagħ to offer sessions on different themes to secondary school students. The sessions held are directly related to the PSCD learning outcomes syllabus. The ‘My choice’ programme focuses on the following themes: Year 9: How to deal with stress – Year 10: My Interests and Hobbies – Year 11: My opinion, my vote. In the information sheet attached HERE, there is more information about the dates available.

Those schools which are interested in one or more of these sessions are to appoint a contact person (details to be included in the application) so that Aġenzija Żgħażagħ communicates with the indicated person directly, to make the necessary arrangements. Thematic STEM Debate for Year 10/Year 11 Students

Heads of School are kindly informed that the Science Centre within the Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes, is organizing the fifth edition of the Thematic STEM Debate. The aim of this activity is to engage students to become active critical thinkers and skilled debaters. Through effective participation in the debate, students will:

▪examine ideas, reports, audio-visual material and policy documents;

▪verify the value of evidence for concepts; ▪recognize strengths and weaknesses of arguments;

▪engage with opposing views and speak strategically.

The theme to the debate is ‘Medical technology is here to stay: What is the future of medical technology and how will we overcome the challenges?’. In preparation for the Thematic STEM debate, student participants together with their mentors are requested to carefully read and analyse the documents listed hereunder:

Playcon 2022

Heads of School are kindly informed that between Thursday 3rd and Sunday 6th November 2022, GMR together with Gaming Malta, with the support of the Ministry for Economy, EU Funds and Lands and the cooperation of the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation are organising Playcon, Malta’s largest Game Development and Esports Expo, at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre (MFCC) in Ta’Qali. On Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th November, between 09:00 and 14:00, the Expo will be open for Year4 to Year11 students. There is no entrance fee, and transport costs will be covered.

As per its first edition, Playcon will again showcase the educational value of games and esports while giving students the opportunity to experience first- hand the principles of learning founding good game designs. During the Expo, students will be able to attend a selected number of workshops, organised as part of the EU Code

Week, during which they will be able to experience coding in a fun and interactive way. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a number of hands-on activities like a sim- racing challenge and play a number of games, including Minecraft (Education Edition). Students will be also touring the Expo and the various stands related to esports and careers in game design and development, apart from witnessing a number of emerging technologies.

Din l-attività se ssir ġewwa l-Imdinau se jkollha rabta diretta mas-sillabu l-ġdid tad-9 sena fis-Sekondarja. Se ssirattività interattiva bil-poeżija ‘Univers Ieħor’biswit il-Katidral tal-Imdina. Mhux biss se jitgħallmu l-poeżija b’mod interattiv iżda wkoll se joħorġu l-aspetti bijografiċi tal-poeta.Se ssir ukoll żjara fil-mużew tal-Katidralfejn se jżuru l-kamra ddedikata lil Dun Karm. Wara se jintwera filmat fuq il-poeta nazzjonali, Dun Karm, u jsir kwiżż bejn l-istudenti.

L-istudenti se jkollhom ukoll l-opportunità unika li jżuru l-mużew tal-arkivji, fejn se jintwerew materjal antik konness ma’ Malta udokumenti li fihom kliem jew kitbiet antiki bil-Malti. Teach, Inspire and Protect Erasmus + Project at Mgarr Primary School

After three years of hard work, Teach Inspire and Protect Project 2018-2021, an outdoor learning project kindly co-funded by ERASMUS+, comes to an official end on the 25th November 2021 but its impact will last for ever. Thanks to many hard-working people, children today come to school with a beaming face knowing that their learning is going to be fun. Let us walk you through this unforgettable experience to show you how our school was transformed !

This is the second stage of our project which focused on the enhancement of our outdoor spaces making them stimulating and conducive to child-led outdoor learning.

School Transition Programmes for Primary, Middle, Secondary and Post-Secondary Education offered by Aġenzija Żgħażagħ

As students transition from primary school to middle school, from middle school to secondary school and from secondary school to post-secondary school they are often faced with social, emotional and physiological changes that can impact on their wellbeing and learning. Aġenzija Żgħażagħ is offering three programmes that can help facilitate a smoother transition from one school to another. These programmes were designed specifically to be fun and interactive while catering for the needs of these students and to provide the necessary life skills through which students can maintain their wellbeing and learning. These programmes are being offered both online and face to face.
