Organisation of School Based Sports Activities

The Centre for Physical Education and Sport in collaboration with other sport entities has successfully organized a wide range of sport initiatives and events aimed at Primary School learners. These initiatives and programmes left a positive impact on the participating learners, and the Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes (DLAP) is planning the next scholastic year’s calendar of events.

During scholastic year 2022-2023, the DLAP is planning to provide learners a wider range of sport disciplines. In this context, stakeholders involved in sport are invited to collaborate. DLAP invites Sport Associations, Sport Entities, Sports Professionals and anyone working in the field of Sport to submit a brief proposal regarding the organization of school-based events and initiatives, SCDP related programmes, intra-college and/or national competitive and non-competitive events as well as talent-identification projects at Primary School level. These proposals should be addressed to miriam.aquilina@ilearn.edu.mt by not later than Friday 18th March 2022. All proposals will be evaluated by the Education Officer for Physical Education (Primary) and the approved proposals will then form part of the School Sports Events for Scholastic Year 2022-2023. Active Citizenship – Webinars for Year 8 to Year 11


The Social Studies department within the Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes is once again collaborating with Aġenzija Żgħażagħ to offer a series if webinars to Middle and Secondary School students. This year’s running theme is ‘Active Citizenship’ and the subjects chosen are directly related to the Social Studies
syllabus:

Year 8: Demokrazija I.S.S.A.
Year 9: Nikkontribwixxi I.S.S.A.
Year 10: Nikkontribwixxi I.S.S.A
Year 11: Nikkontribwixxi I.S.S.A

These sessions will be streamed live to students via MS Teams. The Social Studies teacher is to facilitate the streaming session in his or her classroom respectively.

Schools are to appoint a contact person (details to be included in the application) so that Aġenzija Żgħażagħ communicates with the indicated person to make the necessary arrangements. Safer Internet Day – Resources for PSCD Teachers

The PSCD department within the Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes is once again collaborating with the Commissioner for Children, Aġenzija Appoġġ, and the Cyber Crime Unit within the BeSmart Online Project to celebrate Safer Internet Day. This year, Safer Internet Day will be celebrated on Tuesday 8 th February 2022. Safer Internet Day aims to not only promote a safer internet but also a better internet, where everyone is empowered to use technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively.

The PSCD teachers are being encouraged to make students aware of this day and carry out lessons and clips prepared for middle and secondary students during the safer internet day or during that week. The lessons prepared are part of the PSCD learning outcomes syllabus and complement work already done in class and in the reflective workbooks. The toolkit created by the BeSmart Online Team includes lesson plans, video clips and other resources that can be accessed through the link https://www.besmartonline.org.mt/sid-toolkit.

Sessions on Early Language Development for Parents and Guardians

The Language Policy in Education Unit within the National Literacy Agency, in collaboration with the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Malta, will be organising sessions on early language development. These sessions are aimed for parents and guardians whose children are aged 0-3. The sessions, led by Dr Daniela Gatt and by Dr Lara Ann Vella, will be held online 10:00 am to 11:00 am. All sessions will be held in English.

Read me a Book – Aqrali Ktieb

​The National Literacy Agency has launched a virtual video library ‘Aqrali Ktieb/Read me a Book’.  The library offers a range of recorded Reading for Pleasure sessions for children aged 0 to 11 years. These sessions were produced in English and Maltese by the reading animators of the Agency.

Educators and parents may borrow up to two recorded sessions, one in Maltese and another one in English every day. These clips, which will be pro​vided free of charge, will be time-barred for a limited period of circa 3 hours.  Applicants may choose the video clips from the below catalogues.

Age of child (0-3, 3-7, 7-11);​

Science Safari Virtual Treasure Hunt 2022

The Science Centre (Pembroke), within the Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes, is organising the ninth edition of the Science Safari. This edition will be held online via Microsoft Teams, on Saturday 26th March 2022. The event programme is can be dowloaded here:

Science Safari Programme

This initiative targets Year 8 students and will involve them in an exciting virtual treasure hunt with the theme ‘Science Safari – STEM around us’. Indeed, students can participate from the comfort of their home as long as they have access to Microsoft Teams. The questions and clues will focus on scientific knowledge, skills and competences, related to everyday contexts.

Vaccine Certificate needed to access Heritage Malta Sites

Heritage Malta would like to inform schools that as from Monday 17th January 2022 visitors to Heritage Malta Sites and Museums will be required to present a valid vaccine certificate. Visitors who do not have a valid vaccine certificate can enter Heritage Malta sites and museums if they provide either of the below:

• Negative RT-PCR or antigen test result not exceeding 72 hours.
• Positive RT-PCR test result not older than 6 months certifying recovery from Covid.
• Vaccination cards issued by health authorities.
• Visitors showing a health certificate stating that visitor cannot be vaccinated due to a health condition.

Students under the age of 12 years are exempt from the above.

Reading Recovery Programme – Malta

This scholastic year, the National Literacy Agency (NLA), in collaboration with University College London (UCL), is implementing Reading Recovery in state primary schools in Malta and Gozo.

Reading Recovery is a literacy intervention programme in English, based on twelve to twenty weeks of instruction, designed to meet the needs of children who have the lowest achievement in literacy learning within a specific 6-month age range in Year 2. Children are taught individually, by a specially trained teacher, for 30 minutes each day. The goal of Reading Recovery is for children to develop effective reading and writing strategies to be able to work within the average range of classroom performance.

Dingli Primary School Embarks on the Digital Citizenship Education Project

Dingli Primary School is one of the first to embark on the Digital Citizenship Education Project within St Nicholas College. 

The Directorate for Digital Literacy & Transversal Skills is committed to support schools and educators to address DCE. Thus, a whole project was designed and developed to address challenges such as online rights and responsibilities, online safety and privacy  issues  amongst others. The aim of this project is to empower children to participate actively in a digital society. This involves providing an education that develops critical analysis and the effective use of digital technologies, while fostering respect for human rights and democratic culture.
