San Martin fl-Iskola tal-Baħrija

Illum, biex inzommu mat-tradizzjoni, kellna ‘special online assembly’ fuq San Martin, il-qaddis patrun tal-Baħrija. It-tfal raw vidjow fuq San Martin u kantaw ‘Ġewż, lewż, qastan, tin’. Tajnihom ukoll borża zgħira bil-ħelu u l-ħobża ta’ San Martin. Il-ħelu provditulna b’xejn is-Sinjura Abigail Falzon ta St. Martin’s Self-Service Store u l-ħobż inxtara mill-Kunsill tal-Iskola. Grazzi kbira.

Today, to keep with tradition, we had a special online assembly on St. Martin, the patron saint of Baħrija. The children saw a video on the life of St. Martin and sang the traditional tune ‘Ġewż, lewż, qastan, tin’. They were also given a small bag with sweets and a St. Martin Bun. The sweets were donated by Ms Abigail Falzon of St. Martin’s Self Service Store and the bun was bought by the School Council. A big thank you.

MEDE Launches The Malta VET Awards

The Ministry for Education and Employment is proud to announce the launch of the Malta Vocational Education and Training Awards for the first time.  These awards provide a platform where good practice, innovation and excellence in VET is given a higher profile and improved visibility. The launch of the Malta VET Awards is aligned with the European Vocational Skills Week, organised each year by the European Commission and each Member State. A number of events and initiatives are organised to celebrate vocational skills, give visibility to VET achievements, and also promote VET in general amongst the general public.  The Malta VET Awards also mirror the VET Excellence Awards which are organised at European level each year. Maltese awardees can eventually be nominated for the European awards.

Rabat Primary School Students Design Healthy Eating Leaflets

The Year 4.1 students of St. Nicholas College, Rabat Primary School, learned about the importance of taking care of their health by eating a sensible and healthy diet. After the lesson, they each designed their own Healthy Eating leaflets, with various logos to accompany them, such as: ‘Be Smart, Eat Smart‘; ‘Eat Well, Feel Good’, ‘Eat Right, be Bright’; ‘Be Smart and Eat Smart‘; and ‘An Apple a day keeps the Doctor away‘.

Changes in MATSEC 2021 Syllabi

The MATSEC Examinations Board is collaborating with State, Church and Independent school sectors to update the Secondary Education Certificate syllabi for 2022 and 2023. At the request of MEDE, and in agreement with the representatives of the church and independent schools, MATSEC will assist in coordinating the gathering of information on what has been covered in Year 9 of the past scholastic year (2019-2020) as well as what is planned for this year in Years 9 and 10.

In view of this, each sector will independently collect data from schools and present it to MATSEC through the sector representative of each subject panel. This will help panels make an informed decision on the changes required to address the present situation in schools where different teaching modalities are in place. The MATSEC subject panels will attempt to streamline the content that is to be covered during this scholastic year by working on the data collected from the schools.

Following this exercise, MATSEC will communicate the updated versions of the syllabi and their assessment so that such changes are also reflected in the teaching. In addition, and for assessment purposes only, MATSEC is assuming that as from March 2020 until further notice, no practical work, fieldwork and orals would have been assessed in schools. In reflecting this, the syllabus panels will not incorporate them in the updated syllabi.

Back to Basics – Educational Blog by Prof. Charles Farrugia

screen-13.48.02[28.10.2020]The pandemic Covid-19 is playing havoc with our lives, not less so with our children’s schooling. On the positive side, home-learning and tele-schooling have stimulated parents and guardians to participate more closely in their children’s education. During this experience, parents have become more aware of the many issues that influence their children’s –young or teenagers- schooling.

Professor Charles Farrugia recently launched the educational blog Back to Basics. The blogs explore different aspects of teaching and learning. These blogs are directed mainly at parents/guardians but teachers and other educators may find them useful as well.
