IMPATT – Encouraging young people to participate in local and national decision making

The Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes in partnership with the Maltese National Commission for UNESCO and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ invites Middle Schools to participate in a new ESD initiative, named IMPATT. This initiative aims to encourage young people in Years 7 and 8 to actively participate in local and national democratic decision-making. During this scholastic year, IMPATT will, hence, provide an opportunity to Middle school students to research historical and cultural heritage pertaining to several Maltese localities, while analysing how the course of time impacted their respective social, environmental, economic and cultural dimensions. This initiative will also require participating students to draft brief proposals encouraging Local Councils to ensure further sustainable development aligned to Malta’s Sustainable Development Vision 2050. In this context, schools are invited to participate in this initiative by nominating a team of between 5 and 8 students and a link educator. IMPATT initiative will unfold as per schedule below:

Interested schools are invited to express their interest in participating in IMPATT by compiling the form accessible through the link https://forms.office.com/r/v0vKY2Picj until Friday 18th March 2022. A brief meeting will be scheduled with registering schools. This will offer support in launching the initiative at school level. During the final event, an adjudication panel will evaluate student group presentations and proposals. Prizes for the best two performing teams are as follows:

i. First: Premju IMPATT – €1,000 worth of Global Citizenship Education literature material (for the school resource repertoire).
ii. Second: Mexxejja t’Għada – €500 worth of Global Citizenship Education literature material (for the school resource repertoire).

All participating students will be awarded a participation certificate and tokens. Each student in the two winning teams will also be awarded a book prize, with a UNESCO theme, donated by the Maltese National Commission for UNESCO.
